Growing up, their was an older kid in our neighborhood who owned a maroon, 1966 Mustang Fastback. Though the 1964 1/2 Mustang and 1965 Coupes were the originals, I was always partial to the sleek look of the '66 Fastback. Those "shark-gill" looking vents that tapered the roof onto the trunk, looked fast and mean, even when the car was standing still. I remember asking my parents to drive around the block just to see that car.
When I moved to Lake Tahoe after college, and was looking to buy a car, a co-worker of mine mentioned that his roommate was selling a Mustang, but had no other details. As I walked down the street toward the house after work, I was shocked to see it was the '66 Fastback. The grill looked like it was smiling at me as I got closer. The best part was that it only cost $450.00, which I could barely afford on my hardware clerk income. My dream car was a reality!
After buying the car, I noticed under the trunk, where the new paint hadn't completely covered the old, that the orignal maroon color was exposed. Could it be the same car that I was in love with in my younger years? Who knows, maybe the car found me? Though I had to come to my senses a few years later and get a four wheel drive since I lived in snow country, I will always have the fondest memories of my '66 Mustang Fastback!
Someday, I'll get another one, though I know it won't cost $450.00.
