Two or so years ago my wife and I were driving through a small town nearby and came upon an classic car/truck cruise-in. We passed a really nice 49 Ford F-1 and I remarked that it was just like the one I drove as a teenager and man would I love to have one again! About a year later my wife told me she wanted us to visit a friend's body shop/restoration facility to see a restored "General Lee" that was ready to ship out. Upon arrival, our friend Jim stated that we just missed the General Lee but since we were here he had a new arrival that we might want to see. He took us back into a warehouse and there sat a really beautiful green '49 F-1. "Man, that is a beautiful truck! How much is it?" I asked. "It's not for sale", he replied, as he reached into his pocket, came out with the keys and handed them to me- "It's yours, Happy Birthday from your wife!" After hugging my sweet wife, I hopped behind the steering wheel and started it up with tears running down my face.
As it turns out, this had been a well kept secret for several months while Jim and my wife were searching the U.S. for a suitable '49 F1 flathead V-8 like the one my Dad owned and let me drive. They located this one, bought it and brought it back home all without me having a clue as to what was going on.
Now my daily driver,it continues to get a lot of attention and many thumbs up, smiles and favorable comments from people we pass on the road or meet at the many cruise-ins we now frequent. Seems like just about everyone enjoys seeing an old truck still driving along.
And Yes, I do have a very sweet and special wife!!
