When I heard about the plans for the 50th anniveersary of the Mackinaw Bridge, I knew I had to be a part of it. They wanted convertibles, one from each year 1957-2007, to form a parade. I searched and found a 1997 gold Mustang GT convertible and purchased it just for the occasion. We drove up to St. Ignace the night before the celebration. In the morning, we formed the parade, some of us carrying dignitaries. I was honored to be driving the mayor of St. Ignace.
The parade wound through St Igance, crowds of people lining the streets. As we got to the Bridge, we were realigned while the Bridge was closed to all routine traffic. We were then allowded to proceed on all four lanes southbound to Mackinaw. It was like a huge party--with all the cars running south, drivers and passengers waving to one another. Getting to Mackinaw, we stopped for refreshments and reformed for another parade through Mackinaw.
After another Bridge crossing we pulled into the park in St. Ignace in Mackinaw where each car received a commerative license plate and where many displays marked the event. That night we were treated to fantastic firework shows almost simultaneouly from Mackinac Isaland, Mackinaw and St. Ignace.
