My 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with 5 speed manual transmission stopped shifting into reverse. I took it to several transmission shops and also a GM dealer, as no Pontiac dealers exist anymore. No one was able to find replacement cables to remedy the problem. I searched for months online for a supplier of such cables without success as they were discontinued and no longer in stock anywhere. I ended up removing the cables myself and then tried to find someone to repair them. Again no luck in that endeavor. The cables are proprietary to the Grand Prix 5 speed manual transmission and have very special fittings which are irreplaceable. After analyzing the cables and determining how they were built and designed, I devised a fix for the broken selector cable. Once the fix was completed, the cables were reinstalled and now I have a fully functioning transmission. The actual cost of materials to make the repair was about $2.00. It just took several months to get the repair done due to the in unavailability of new replacement cables. I am a 'bulldog' when it comes to finding a solution to a problem and in this case I'm glad I am!!
