It was 1966 and I was 19. I finally convinced myself (and my parents who were helping me to afford college) that it was time to buy a car for me rather than borrowing theirs.
I found a 1956 Bel Air 2 door hardtop sitting in a salvage/junkyard with no motor or transmission. Just sitting there needing a drivetrain and a new owner.
The previous owner had used the body for a drag race car and he kept his 409 engine and the 4 speed he raced with and dumped the body.
I was able to talk the man who owned the junkyard into selling me the car. Actually, I have always felt he was a car guy who knew how cool the car was and how bad I wanted it. That's why he put a small block and a new 3 speed floor shift transmission in it, so I could drive it away, and I did drive it away for $250, new engine and all.
What fun it was and how I wish I still had it.
I'll never find another one for that price.
