Having owned about 8 Scirocco's since 1975, I decided this one was a keeper. 1981 was the last year for the MK1 and I didn't really care for the MK2, so I put this one away in 1985, with 43,000 original miles. It is a South Florida car, has always been garaged, and has never seen snow, not even on TV.
By 1988, the original engine had gone to another project (1980 Audi 4000), as had the tires and battery.
In 1990, I obtained (virtually stole) a "PL" 16V engine from a 1988 Scirocco MK2 with 7,000 miles, as well as the BBS wheels, rear disk brakes and a few other goodies, and grafted them into my 1981.
Took it to Show-and-Shine 7 in Ft Lauderdale and won a trophy!
I got my jollies for a few months, but had a growing business to run, so the Scirocco went back into the garage, covered over for the next 20 years.
In 2010, a friend from St Lucia and I took up the project again, and put it back on the road.
Took it to Show-and-Shine 27 in Ft Lauderdale and won another trophy!
This car has original paint, original interior, no cracks on the dashboard and looks and runs like a new car.
It has 46,000 original miles, and the engine and transmission (5-speed) have about 10,000 miles now.
It's the only survivor I have seen in decades, are there any others?
