When I retired a few years ago, I treated myself to a 1954 MG-TF 1500, one of a long history of owning LBC's - Little British Cars. My wife, however, was not as enamored of the MG, and often complained of it being "too hot," "messing my hair," or "too noisy." She seldom rode in it, even in our beautiful Southern California weather. After several years of declining drives, I asked her what classic car she really wanted. Without hesitation, she said "a Rolls Royce!" In my mind I began thinking - "hmm, she's also retiring soon. What a great present that would be for her."
This began a search for the right Rolls Royce, a Proper Motor Car - PMC. After lots of research, joining RROC, and losing out on a local Silver Cloud, I found the perfect one through Hemmings but located near Chicago. The gracious owner agreed to hold the car for several weeks so I could see it when returning through Chicago from a trip back East. It was love at first sight! The owner and I struck a deal and in November, 2012, our 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I (SBC130) was delivered to our Southern California home. With a champagne toast, I presented my wife with her retirement present.
We decided to name her "Grace". Grace was my wife's mother's first name and she holds a very special place in our hearts. Grace also very aptly describes our beautiful PMC. Painted in her original colours of Sage Green over Smoke Green, she turns heads whenever driving to local restaurants, attending classic car shows or participating in RROC events. Not once have I heard a complaint of it being too noisy, it being too hot or having messy hair.
All in all, a very "Grece"ful Retirement Present!
