Equipment
426/425hp Hemi, 4-speed with pistol grip shifter, hub caps, Goodyear Polyglas GT tires, Dave Wise report, window sticker.
Condition
#3 Good
Runs and drives well. Flaws not noticeable to passersby. Most common condition.
Unrestored original Hemi 4-speed, known as the "Black Ghost" and widely publicized both before this auction and when it was added to the Historic Vehicle Association Register in late 2020. Purchased new by Detroit cop Godfrey Qualls and sold here by his son. A well-known car because it would appear on Woodward avenue, take on all comers in late night drag races, and then disappear (officer Qualls didn't want to get in trouble at work). It is now running but still completely original, complete with nicks and parking lot dents.
Market commentary
An unrestored original Hemi 4-speed Challenger would already be a big deal, but this car's neat and widely circulated story brought extra eyes to it. There was plenty of speculation that it would top $1M and with a buyer's fee on top of the winning $975K bid, it did.
