Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

Prepared by Motion Performance for drag racing by its first owner, Clem Hoppe, and highly visible in East Coast drags late 60s. Flared rear fenders from new, short side exhausts. Now with 427 side oiler and only 6,593 miles from new. Restored some time ago in original colors and visibly ageing. Poor side curtains, aged Halibrand mags, good paint but aged interior. Probably needs attention before its driven any distance, but an OK showpiece. Saturday S188.

Market commentary

Treated for years as a reverential object, this drag racing Cobra 427 has little utility and brought a pretty impressive price for something that will just go around being worshiped by the Cobra faithful. The price is $83,000 more than RM got for the Harr Ford Dragonsnake CSX 3198 in Monterey last August, which demonstrates Russo & Steeles drawing power among the Shelby crowd.
