Vehicle details

Notes and observations recorded by Hagerty staff.

Equipment

The 2nd Cobra built, Shelbys track demonstrator and development car, driven by Billy Krause, Dan Gurney, Ken Miles, Fireball Roberts and others. Restored in 77 using most of the original parts. Looks like an old, used race car should with aged Goodyear Blue Streaks on kidney bean Halibrands, windshield scratches where tech inspection stickers were scraped off and a worn vinyl interior. No Reserve.

Market commentary

With ordinary street 289 Cobras selling this weekend for $125 150,000, this price is realistic. Marketed aggressively by RM, driven onto the auction block by Carroll hisself and arguably more important than even the later USRRC Cobras, a little more than triple the price of a decent street car is a sensible premium for a car with such history and presented with so much of its patina intact.
