Equipment
255 Offy (engine number indicates it was built as a 270), 2 speed gearbox, Jones chronometric tach and US Gauge temp and oil pressure gauges. Kidney bean wheels, torsion bar suspension, tube shocks, 4 wheel Halibrand spot disc brakes, chromed suspension. Raced by A.J. Foyt for Bowes Seal Fast to win the 1960 and 1961 USAC National Championship and for Sheraton Thompson in 1963. Winner of 13 of 26 races entered. Eventually restored by Frank Murray, Lynn Paxton, Buster Warke and others to 1961 configuration. Displayed in Joes Garage for 10 years. Very clean, sharp and original. A little oil residue on the engine pan shows its real. Not fresh or race ready, but visibly a cut above most old race cars in condition. No Reserve.
Market commentary
Sold to a phone bidder after aggressive pursuit by informed collectors in the room, this is a handsome and important Sprint car. On the other hand, its hard to imagine a Sprint car that before today is handsome or important enough to warrant this kind of money. This is, to all intents and purposes, a half million dollars. In those terms its transaction value becomes a head scratcher.
