Condition
RHD, silver painted Borranis, headrest, single windscreen with aluminum passenger's tonneau. Casimiro de Oliveira, 0366AM's first owner, crashed it so often it needed a new body -- this one -- after only a year, replacing its original Pinin Farina Spider coachwork. The evolution from PF to Scaglietti is striking and shows the way to future Scaglietti competition bodies on Testa Rossas and all the rest. Restored to competent historic race-ready condition; looks good but not too good to be driven enthusiastically.
Market commentary
On sale from $1.5 million, the bidding dragged on between two indecisive telephone bidders in minuscule increments of $5-15,000 eventually reaching the $1,750,000 hammer price in a process that became "auction theater." It's a great car, bought for considerably less than it would have brought with its original PF body and important in its own right. The price is fair and the inherent value of this car as the entry ticket to all sorts of events is more than it appears on the surface.
