Equipment
RHD. Black wire wheels, blackwall tires, dual vee windshields with wind wings, taper tail body, flying rear fenders, clamshell fronts, inverted airfoil running boards. One of a four car series of lightweight experimental cars. After 4,500 miles of testing at Rolls sold to Maharaja Hari Singh Bahadur. Stayed in India until 1976 when it was sold to Chris Renwick, Veniero Molari and Giulio Vignale for whom it was restored in Italy. Displayed at Pebble Beach in 2004 and Most Elegant Rolls Royce at Villa dEste in 2006. Now shows some age and looks like a 5 year old restoration with more than a few miles. No Reserve.
Market commentary
Offered by Bonhams at Quail Lodge a year ago where it was reported bid to $1.5 million. This price makes a lot more sense even though it is a lot for a Rolls Royce Phantom with sketchy coachwork. Theres something elusive and inviting about the concept of a sports Rolls Royce, though, and this is one of the prime examples of the genre.
