Model overview

Model description

The Fairlane intermediate sported a completely fresh look for 1966, with stacked headlamps at the front reflecting contemporary big Fords. For the first time, Fairlane Convertible models were offered. Both the new drop-top and 2-dr. hardtop was available with GT or GTA (automatic transmission) package, which included a specially tuned 335-hp 390-cid Ford FE big-block V8 and other performance upgrades. The new 2-door Fairlane 500XL models also had a sporty look and were equipped with deluxe bucket-seat interiors. The XL could be ordered with a Ford six, or small- or big-block V8. A small number of 427 cars were produced for factory drag racing purposes and competed with great success. Minimally changed in appearance, the 1967 Fairlanes incorporated new safety features, including a dual-chamber brake system. A very limited number of non-GT Fairlanes with 4-bbl. 410-hp and 2x4-bbl. 425-hp "side-oiler” 427 Fairlanes were built this year. The ultra-rare 427-equipped 1966-67 Fairlanes are blue-chip muscle car classics. Although more sedate, Fairlane 500 GT/GTA coupes and convertibles exude Sixties performance imagery, while a sporty 500 XL can be very satisfying collector car.
