Model overview

Model description

Chevrolet terminated its support for the International Race of Champion races series (IROC) at the end of 1990, so production of the Camaros ended early and the new 1991 Camaro was launched much earlier in the year than normal. The Camaro Z28 name was also revived to replace the IROC-Z.

The four 1991 Camaro models were the RS Coupe and Convertible and the Z28 Coupe and Convertible. In all, 100,838 Camaros were built, with 31,722 V-6-powered and 69,116 with V-8s. All 1991 Camaros had new ground-effects packages. The Z28 had a taller rear spoiler, while the RS coupe maintained the 1990 design, both with the central brake light behind the rear hatch. Convertibles kept the same spoiler as 1990, and the brake light was integral.

The Camaro RS Coupe were offered with the base 140hp V-6 engine and 79,854 were sold starting at $12,180. Only 5,329 RS Convertibles were built with 170hp V-8 engines starting at $17,960. A total of 12,452 Z28 Coupes were built starting at $15,445, but only 3,203 Z28s were built as convertibles starting at $20,815.

One V-8 engine was available as an upgrade to the RS Coupe and 53,040 shoppers opted to pay an extra $350 for the 170hp 305 cid V-8 in the RS Coupe and Convertible. The 205hp 305 cid V-8 was standard in the Z28 and not available in the RS.

A further 6,080 Z28 Coupe customers shelled out $300 for the bigger 245hp 350 cid V-8. A 5-speed manual gearbox was offered as the base transmission, but 85,321 customers decided to spend an extra $515 for a 4-speed overdrive automatic transmission.

A new package offered this year was the B4C Special Service (or police) Package. It offered RS buyers the chance to buy the bigger Z28 V-8 along with dual exhausts, but was only available with automatic transmission. If the Z28’s RPO B2L package was ordered as well it cost $3,950, but the plain heavy duty go fast elements could be bought separately for $3,135. Only 592 buyers selected one of the two options, but were rewarded with air conditioning, 4-wheel disc brakes, oil cooler, heavy duty suspension, Positraction axle, 145 mph speedometer and 105-amp alternator.

Chevrolet built 478 Camaro 1LE Z28 Coupes for SCCA Showroom Stock racing, starting with the RPO G92 performance axle. If air conditioning was ordered the car received 4-wheel disc brakes, an oil cooler and dual exhaust. If air conditioning was not included, heavy duty Corvette performance parts were added. The package cost $466 with air-conditioning, $675 without. Buyers who wanted a 5-speed gearbox received the 230hp LB9 V-8, as the 245hp L98 V-8 was only available with an automatic transmission.

Eight colors were offered for the 1991 Chevrolet Camaro. Dark Teal (22,093) was new and led the field, followed by Bright Red (19,082), Artic White (18,313), Black (12,801), Ultra Blue (11,038), Dark Red (9,784), Light Blue (3,873) and Medium Gray (3,715).
