How Many Opel GTs Can Davin Get Running in One Day?

The latest episode of Will It Run? opens with a deal. If Davin, host and the face of Redline Rebuild, can start enough of his buddy’s languishing Opel GTs, his friend will let Davin drive the “Baby Corvette,” his Opel GT race car.

Just how many cars are we talking about, you ask?

Davin begins by doing some recon. He then does an exercise in engine triage, deciding to start with the easiest—the Opel that appears to be in the best condition—and ending with one that will surely be a challenge. That one was parked with the hood off, and the valve cover removed.

Davin approaches each inline-four with the same set of questions, making sure he can answer each one with a yes before proceeding to the next: Will it turn over with the starter? Does it have spark? What about oil? Finally, does the engine have fuel? If you read our recent article on what happens when cars sit, you’ll know why he is so careful: Especially because these cars have been sitting outside, there’s an increased chance of water intrusion and rust in critical areas. The last thing Davin wants to do is rush the job and, out of impatience or excitement, damage one of his friend’s cars.

Of course, with Davin as host, some excitement is guaranteed. Each successful start—and there are several—is met with a cackle of triumph.

Along the way, the video cuts to two brief “explainer” sections. In the first, Davin breaks down exactly what it means for an engine “to have spark.” If you’re rusty on your under-hood knowledge when it comes to electrical systems, it’s a great refresher—and if you’re looking at a condenser for the first time, Davin is an excellent teacher. In the second, Davin explains why he pours diesel into the engine of the fourth car, which proves to be the most challenging of the Opels that day. Only a crazy person would put diesel into a gas engine, right? As we know by now, there’s a method to Davin’s madness, and the little inline-four doesn’t just survive, it even … well, we can’t go spoiling the ending!
