Auction Preview: Rare Bugatti headlines Leake’s Dallas classic car auction
A rare 1934 Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix from the John Ridings Lee collection will be the star attraction at Leake Auction Company’s Dallas auction Nov. 21-23.
The Bugatti, scheduled to cross the block on Nov. 22, is among 600 vehicles that will be offered at Dallas Market Hall.
Bugatti built only 40 Type 51 automobiles from 1931-34. Lee purchased the car, bearing chassis No. 51153, from the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, Calif., 2½ years ago. It has a twin-overhead cam supercharged straight-eight Grand Prix engine and has been raced at vintage car events at Laguna Seca. It is painted Bugatti Blue with black leather interior.
Documentation includes a Fiva Identity Card, issued to the Bugatti in April 1998; a historical vehicle identity form, issued by Federation International DE Automobile; a letter from David Sewell, independent Bugatti consultant, on Sept. 15, 2003, attesting to facts pertaining to the automobile; and historical reports from Sewell, Donald Koleman and American Bugatti Club registrar Sandy Leith, as well as a feature story by Thor Thorson profiling the car.
