Watch the Ford Mustang GTD Set a New Nürburgring Record
Numerous small but significant modifications helped the Ford Mustang GTD secure its spot as the fastest American car around the famously difficult Nürburgring track. Engineers made the GTD over five seconds faster, which is no small feat, but reading about it isn’t quite the same as seeing it. Luckily, Ford released a video that lets us watch (and hear!) the GTD go around the Green Hell in well under seven minutes.
One of the best parts about cars getting faster on the ‘Ring is that you can watch a full lap during a quick break; You’d almost need to take an afternoon off if we were talking about, say, a Subaru 360. The 6:57-minute long video shows two angles: There’s a forward-facing camera and one aimed at pilot Dirk Müller. Ford also included a timer, a speedometer, and a map of the track to show the Mustang’s exact location.
We haven’t driven the GTD yet, but watching the speedometer gives us a great idea of what to expect: The 815-horsepower coupe takes less than 10 seconds to effortlessly accelerate from 200 to 250 kph (124 to 155 mph), and it briefly crosses the 300-kph (186-mph) mark on the straight, which is stunning. The speed that the GTD carries around some of the track’s tighter corners is jaw-dropping, too.
The video showing the full, 6:52:072 lap is embedded above. Sit back, turn up the sound, and enjoy. You can compare it to the old record (6:57:685) by watching the video that Ford published in December 2024.
Production of the Ford Mustang GTD is scheduled to start in the spring of 2025, so the first deliveries are presumably right around the corner. Better yet, Ford confirmed that the customer-bound cars will benefit from all of the updates that the engineers developed to make the coupe even faster around the Nürburgring.

A fun video to watch. When cars get that fast you almost expect them to get some big air but the aerodynamic packages they have prevent them from going all Knight Rider on every jump. Amazing to watch.
Incredible
If I was sitting in the passenger seat during that run, I’d have to check my underwear after getting out of the car! WOW!!
I want to see a Subaru 360 do the Nürburgring. I figure it’ll take about 45 minutes!
How much real Mustang is there left other than the Emblem?
Anyone can build a race car to do this. But make one you can drive to work daily and do this for under $200K then that would be impressive.
Ford had better start to figure our how to get their stock over $10 again and how to not have so many recalls.
The run in twenty twenty four was much more visceral than this one. This run seems to be a lot more subdued. I don’t know if it’s the placement of the microphone or if they did make the car quieter. Either way, a fantastic run of the ring.
