After five months of pandemic-related delays and numerous teasers and videos, GMC finally showed the Hummer EV pickup to the world. Although the edges have been smoothed, the styling rings true to the Hummer brand that we last saw in showrooms in 2009. The new all-electric Hummer EV still wears its military roots proudly though, now it just looks more like something from this century. The characteristic short overhangs from the original Hummer lineup remain, as does the rather upright windshield. Gone, however, is the slotted grille that caused so much friction with Jeep. In its place is a six-element grille, with one block for every letter in “HUMMER.” The illuminated grille is the same height as the headlights, which also serve as massive charging indicators.

GMC touted the Hummer EV’s electric horsepower long before its eventual reveal, claiming 1000 ponies in total from both axles. The Edition 1 will use three separate motors and two Ultium drive units to deliver the 1000 hp output and 350+ miles of range on a full charge. With 800-volt DC quick-charging, 100 miles of range can be added in about 10 minutes.

Unlike the all-electric sedans and SUVs that have made their way to the market thus far, the Hummer EV promises to deliver impressive off-road capability thanks to factory 35-inch tires and an adaptive air suspension that can raise the body up to six inches for what they call “Extract Mode” that provides up to 15.9 inches of ground clearance. GMC noted that 37-inch tires will fit, but the factory 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory mud-terrain tires will still allow more than two feet of water fording capability and enable the Hummer EV to climb over an 18-inch vertical ledge. Steel skidplates armor the undercarriage while underbody cameras mounted front and rear help the driver pick the right line over difficult terrain. They’re part of UltraVision, what GMC claims as an industry-leading 18 camera views to help drivers navigate their surroundings. GMC also noted that the 13.4-inch infotainment screen will be able to display several off-road widgets including the status of the differential lockers (plural), tire pressure, and pitch and roll angles.

As promised, four-wheel steering will be standard on the Hummer EV Edition 1, allowing for easier parallel parking and a much-diminished turning radius. It should allow the big crew-cab to navigate both parking garages and off-road switchbacks like a much smaller vehicle. Also standard on the Edition 1 is the latest version of Super Cruise, which can now enable hands-free passing on some stretches of highway. Other standard features in the Edition 1 are power rear window and tonneau, a Multi-Pro tailgate, and the new Infinity Roof with removable transparent Sky Panels. It’s essentially a four T-tops. The removable panels stow in the frunk.

Finally, the launch edition of the Hummer EV will include the “Watts to Freedom” mode, which sets the electric motors to maximum power for 0-60mph sprints in around 3.0 seconds.

Pricing for the Edition 1, which goes into production late in 2021, is set at $112,595, including destination. Three more versions of the Hummer EV are set to come in the following years. A $99,995 Hummer EV3X will bring the same 1000 hp drivetrain and “Watts to Freedom” ridiculousness but shave some of the luxury goodies. It’s coming in Fall 2022. In Spring 2023, the $89,995 Hummer EV2X debuts with adaptive air ride, extract mode, and four-wheel steer, but with a two-motor system and less power. Finally, in Spring 2024, the $79,995 Hummer EV2 debuts with the EV2X’s powertrain, minus the trick four-wheel steer, extract mode, and adaptive air ride.

Overall, the Hummer EV seems to pack a lot of tech and off-road prowess into a full-size, crew-cab pickup vehicle footprint that’s proven to be incredibly popular with American consumers. This may have just hit all the right notes to appeal to a wide swath of consumers who were already devouring $70,000 luxury pickups. Will enough buyers be able to stomach the six-digit price tag in exchange for the do-anything Hummer EV?
