This gorgeous factory Maserati racer might be the most stunning car in Monterey

It’s not often that a factory Maserati racer heads to the auction block, and the 1954 A6GCS that’s  featured at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auction is among the best examples to ever leave the Fiandri & Malagoli body shop. This spyder is arguably one of the most beautiful Maseratis ever built, and it has a fine racing heritage to sweeten the deal. In person, this car would stop any vintage car enthusiast in their tracks.

The A6GCS followed the A6, Maserati’s first new post-war model. While the A6 used a 1.5-liter SOHC six, the A6CGS is powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC inline-six, which later evolved into the 2.5-liter engine used in the Maserati 250F. This example, serial number 2078, raced for Maserati beginning in 1954 and took first in class at Giro Calabria, Circuit of Senigallia, the RAC Tourist Trophy at Dundrod, and the Bologna-Passo della Raticosa hill climb.

The car was a frequent Mille Miglia competitor in the ‘80s and ‘90s and is powered by a Crosthwaite & Gardner reproduction engine based on the original unit from 2078. The racer looks better than new because it was restored in 2013, just before it won the 2014 Pebble Beach Gran Turismo Award, which earned a spot in the Gran Turismo video game series. So if you can’t scrape together the $3,250,000–$3,750,000 that RM Sotheby’s has estimated the car will sell for, there’s a digital version available.

In February 2018, a 1954 Maserati A6GCS/53 Spyder by Fiandri & Malagoli was sold by auction house Artcurial for $2,880,169, which set a record for the model. If s/n 2078 sells for more, it would be a record for a sports-racing Maserati A6GCS.
