1931 Auburn 8-98

Fresh from his styling triumphs of the Duesenberg Model J and the Cord L-29, Alan Leamy was tasked with restyling the upcoming Auburn automobile line. Leamy gracefully incorporated the hallmark belt-molding which swept down from the center of the radiator and along the beltline of the vehicle. The long sweeping fender line mimicked the angle of the belt-molding. The tall and slender radiator shell was integrated into the body to create a more streamlined look. The newly styled Auburn had now received a much needed image boost and would be the best selling model year with 32,911 units sold. The Custom also came equipped with the newly introduced free-wheeling system. This allowed the driveline to unhook from the engine when not under load and provide clutch-less 1st through 3rd gear changes; the driver only had to remember to lift off the accelerator pedal before shifting.
