1935 Auburn 851

In an effort to spur sagging sales with some much needed publicity, Auburn attempted to set speed and endurance records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with a stock 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster, such as the Speedster seen here. In July 1935, driver Ab Jenkins and an entourage of mechanics, including Augie Duesenberg, arrived at the vast dry salt lake for the speed trials. Sanctioned by the Automobile Club of America (AAA), Jenkins set 70 new American and international stock car records. He set the flying mile mark at more than 104 miles per hour and the 1,000-mile record at nearly 103 miles per hour. Jenkins’ Auburn was the first American stock car to exceed 100 miles per hour in a 12-hour period.
