1967 Mustang Shelby GT500
The Shelby GT500 was the high performance version of the Ford Mustang built by Shelby American from 1967 to 1970. The 1967 GT500 was the first car to utilize the new police interceptor engine and it was more “civilized” than previous versions, which had been built for road racing and were ill suited for everyday driving. To improve performance, Shelby outfitted the GT500s with lightened fiberglass hood and trunk lids. It had a 108-inch wheelbase and weighed 3,000 pounds. It sold for a base price of $4,195 and 2,050 were built.
In September of 1967, production for the Ford Shelby was moved to the A.O. Smith Company of Ionia, MI, and Shelby American became substantially less involved. As aresult, many argue that the 1967 GT500 is the last true Shelby before they became little more than rebadged production Mustangs.
