1970 396/350 HP SS Chevelle

Matching Numbers 396 Big Block V8 Engine, Muncie 4 Speed Manual Transmission, 12 Bolt Rear End. The 396-cubic-inch BB V8 engine was in response to the BB’s powering the Oldsmobile 4-4-2 and Pontiac GTO. Beginning in 1965, the 396 engines powered Chevelles, yes a 396 1965 Chevelle only 210 were made & Corvettes and El Caminos. Chevy phased out the 396 in 1969. In its final year (1969 thus 70 and later) had 9:1 compression ratio, which delivered 265 horsepower, due to the insurance company crackdown and rising gas prices although this 265 hp is known to be downplayed. For many, the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle is the gold standard for the American muscle car due to the revised sheet metal, but also in large part to the thumper big block motors, the flapper hood and very cool now iconic SS stripes on the hood and deck lid (trunk).
