The Great Race Presented By Hagerty, Kicked Off In Downtown Traverse City Today

More Than 90 Vintage Cars and Trucks Embark on Nine-Day Endurance Rally

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (June 23, 2012) – The 2012 Great Race, a road rally in vintage automobiles that rewards precision driving and navigational skills, officially began at 10 a.m. this morning on Front Street in Downtown Traverse City, Mich.  Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was in attendance and served as Grand Marshall as these one-of-a-kind vehicles and competitors embark on a nine-day trek around the Great Lakes, Canada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio before ending at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., on Sunday, July 1.

The rally is described as a throwback – a timed, controlled-speed, endurance competition over scenic highways and rural roads where the aim is to match each stage’s predetermined “perfect time.” Winning scores are the result of teams’ ability to follow specific course instructions precisely.  The champion team is decided by lowest overall score (most accurately driven route) at the end of the event. Vehicles must use original factory parts and modern electronic navigational aids are prohibited.

“This is an ideal event for people who love to drive their classic cars and for families to come down and have a very close look at all of these unique vehicles,” said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance.  “This was the first time the Great Race has been held in northern Michigan, so Traverse City was the perfect place to kick it off.  It was really cool to see how the community embraced it.”

The Great Race, originally named after the 1965 film of the same name, first took place in 1983 when a group of participants competed in a race from Tulsa, Okla., to Indianapolis, Ind.. In subsequent years, Great Race courses have followed a wide variety of cross-country routes typically utilizing small highways and back roads.
