National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) sportsman drag racers have a new weapon to choose from, since Dodge has revealed the 2020 Challenger Drag Pack as a turn-key package to hit the dragstrip.
This is the fourth iteration of the late-model Challenger Drag Pak, and this latest model has taken dragstrip lessons from its predecessors to help make it the most formidable quarter-mile competitor yet. Each Drag Pak begins with a body-in-white Challenger and an SFI-spec roll cage that’s certified for elapsed times as low as 7.50 seconds and integrated into the body. It’s powered by a supercharged 354-cubic-inch Hemi V-8, which is ready to take on the Chevy COPO Camaro and Mustang Cobra Jet on America’s dragstrips.
To make the most of its power, the Challenger Drag Pak is stripped of its factory independent rear suspension and is converted to use a Strange live rear axle and four-link suspension. If you ask Dodge reps, they may tell you, tongue in cheek, that it’s an “eight and four-quarter.” Yep, it’s a Ford nine-inch. It’s pretty much the standard rear axle for the class, and the transmission, a GM Turbo 400, is the same style trans found in Ford’s Cobra Jet. Other go-fast bits include the exclusive Drag Pak wheel and tire package, Racetech seats, Racepak Smartwire power distribution center, and a Kwik-Shift shifter for the manual valve-body transmission.
The new paint scheme for the Drag Pak uses a white base plus a wide blue center stripe and rocker stripe, each with red tracer stripes. A blue Mopar logo meets the rocker stripe and leads to a horizontal red band around the rear of the car for a patriotic throwback to the muscle car era.
Production is limited to only 50 units, so, like the Drag Pak Challengers before it, this version will likely be a hot commodity and a future collectible.
