Wrenching, driving or drinking?

Question of the Week 2-15-16

After spending 13 years in the warm, blissful Los Angeles sun, I moved to Traverse City, Mich., to write and edit for Hagerty, a company I’ve long admired. But after about one month, I’m beginning to lose my sanity because of the weather. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the cold and I love snow—but I can’t take my cars out to play due to the snow and ice. And I can’t sit in front of the TV or read for hours on end; I get stir crazy. So what do Gearheads do in cold weather climes?

I realize how ridiculous this question sounds, but in L.A. I was out driving the canyons or hitting a cars & coffee every single weekend. The sticky summer tires never came off, everything was rear-wheel drive and the only limiting factor, traffic, was a non-issue on the mountain passes I stalked.

What to do? Should I get something to wrench on, should I buy an AWD rally monster and “damn the torpedoes” (although rust is a worry), or should I just start drinking heavily? Heck, maybe it’s as simple as finding some buddies with whom to watch racing.

So we’d like to know: What gets you through those never-ending winter days?

As a post-West-coaster myself, winter does present a challenge. But, yes, get an AWD rally model and join Jonathan above, for an outdoor excursion. I'll bet he knows of a lot of good winter rally-type roads. Don't worry about the road salt, since when summer arrives, just have the car's lower seams oil-coated and you'll be good against rust for the life of the car. If you stay in Michigan, get a residence with a two-to-three car heated garage and you'll have a place to play and work on your stuff year-round. Mount a nice wallscreen TV and it'll be your own living room. Only a couple of months to go, and spring will be here, the roads beckon and you're away, perhaps in that beautiful NSX of yours!

Get a used WRX/EVO/R32 or anything AWD and go out and have a blast. AWD in the snow is one of the great joys in life!

I have a Model A with winter-siped tires on it. There is nothing trailer queen about that car...and it should go out for a winter spin sometime soon!

Get a house with a nice heated garage and find an AWD rally car project, or go the opposite route and get a Jeep or off-road project that can explore seasonal trails over the winter. It's more slow and curious than fast and furious, but it's beautiful back there.

Thanks for your comments guys... I was considering a motorcycle for a complete tear-down and custom build, but the deal seems to be falling through. Maybe AWD is the answer...

Man up! Stick with the rwd, get a beater, some crazy snow tires and do lots of donuts, slipping, sliding and damn-near drifting :)
