Model overview

Model description

Perhaps inspired by the SVO Mustang, which debuted in 1984, the 1985 Ford Mustang received a cleaner front-end look. The egg crate grille was replaced with a cleaner one that had a large vent below the Ford Blue Oval logo.

Halfway through the production year, the headlights of the SVO went from being recessed to being flush with the corner lights for a cleaner look. This would influence future Mustang design for years to come. The SVO’s turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine also received a mid-year power upgrade from 175 horsepower to an impressive 205 horsepower thanks to larger fuel injectors and a revised turbocharger.

The Mustang GT received visual updates, including slightly revised “GT” graphics and new 10-hole alloy wheels. More importantly, the 5.0 H.O. was updated, including throttle body fuel injection, roller tappets, and a high-performance cam. The result was an output of 210 horsepower.

In 1970, Ford had debuted the Mustang Twister Special. As the name suggests, these Mach 1 variants were sold in Kansas City-area dealerships, and 96 were built. They featured either the Super Cobra Ram Jet or the 351cid Cleveland V-8. They were sold in Grabber Orange with a black hood stripe, and a tornado decal could be found on the side.

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of that very special Mustang, the Twister II Edition was sold. Once again sold in the Kansas City area, they were based on Mustang GT fastbacks and GT convertibles, and featured “Twister II” decals along the doors. Only 90 Fox body Twister II Special Editions were made, making them the most collectible of the 1985 Mustangs.
