Drivers of this month's change

After six month-over-month decreases so far this year, the Hagerty Market Rating increased for September and increased yet again for October, growing slightly to 65.24.

The optimism from market observers coming out of Monterey in August has continued into October. The expert sentiment component of the Hagerty Market Rating grew again for October, but the increase was not as high as last month.

Prices on both the auction market and the private market are up slightly over last month, but the number of cars consigned at auction and the number of cars that changed hands privately both decreased slightly.

Other trends have continued their downward movement seen throughout much of the year, but not enough to offset the rating's positive movement over the past two months. Namely, the number expressing the belief that the values of their vehicles are increasing continues to go down, and this is true for both the owners of high-end vehicles and the owners of mainstream vehicles.

As for external market forces, another change in gold prices led to another decrease in the correlated instruments section of the rating, but once again the change was minor.
