Built on a new and shorter 101-inch wheelbase, the redesigned 1982 Firebird was marketed as everything from a roomy compact to an all-out sports coupe. A 2.5L L4 powered the 1982 base Firebird, while the Trans Am offered an optional Chevrolet-sourced 5.0L twin-EFI V-8.
During 1983, a 5.0L High-Output V-8 option good for 0-60 in seven seconds brought traditional V-8 performance back to Trans Am.
Firebird options proliferated as the 1980s progressed — there were Aero packages, Recaro seat packages, WS6 handling packages, 1LE race-ready packages and more. Special editions, such as the 1983 Silver Anniversary Daytona 500 Trans Am and 1984 15th Anniversary Trans Am combined multiple packages into singularly expensive and highly collectible offerings.
The 1987 model year saw a return of Firebird convertible models, the introduction of a striking GTA coupe, a resurrection of the Formula designation and the availability of a new 5.7L TPI V-8. Pontiac was also ratcheting up Firebird quality by this time.
The many special equipment features and groupings offered on the 1982-92 Firebirds make them potentially intriguing collector cars.
