1958 Chevrolet Corvette - Classic Car Price Guide

History of the 1956-1960 Chevrolet Corvette

Restyled in 1956 by Bob Cadaret to include the now famous side cove, the new Vette featured outside door handles, roll up windows, and options like a hard top, power windows, and even a power assisted soft top. From a performance aspect, the Corvette really hit its stride in 1957 with the addition of a 4 speed manual option, fuel injection and the 283 engine making over 270 HP. In 1958, none other than Harley Earl restyled the car, with 1958 only features such as hood louvers and chrome trunk spears and a bolder, 9 tooth grille treatment. The 1959 Vettes are very similar, with the familiar twin headlight look, but sans the hood louvers and trunk spears. By 1960, Corvette production reached 10,000 vehicles for the first time, and the option list continued to grow with 6 new colors available and an aluminum radiator option on the 270 and 290 HP models.
