Marketwatch: Price index of Japanese collector cars
Dave Kinney / 2009-10-22

We were all stunned three years ago when a fairly nondescript, but beautifully preserved light-blue Toyota Corona sedan sold for a whopping $16,000 at the Silver Auction in Fort McDowell, Arizona. The same car sold again in May of 2009 for $36,000 at the Mecum Indy sale, as part of a collection owned by the estate of a Toyota dealer. All of the cars in the collection did quite well. New all-Japanese car shows are regularly popping up, mostly in California. At Hagerty's Cars That Matter, we continue to add vintage Japanese cars to the price guide. As far as we know, we're the first to index the trend in this "emerging market" and what we see looks pretty good. The blue chip Toyota 2000GT is way up from its 2006 value, and has enjoyed a marked increase of late after a year of realtive inactivity. We've broken that out in a separate index to better show how the more affordable Toyotas and Datsuns weathered the economic storm quite well with overall values up 10-15 percent from 2006. We’ll be keeping our eye on early cars from the Land of the Rising Sun.

-Dave Kinney, April 2010, Publisher of Hagerty’s Cars that Matter.

1979 rx7 I bought for 150$ and it's in great shap!! I think good buy

Arguably, the Land Cruiser was the launching point for Toyota's North American success. Little is known about this ubiquitous vehicle and it's beginnings in the wake of WWII. In fact, early models of the truck were modeled on the US military Willys "Jeep". The collector market has been strong for the FJ/BJ40 for many years (rust killed most of them), and I'd love to see Hagerty do a story on them.

Same basic guidelines as for any classic car: original paint color matters a lot; dark colors more desirable, 2doors are usually worth more than 4 doors...

"So is it time to sell or buy?" It is time to DRIVE!

...about 2002 OZ Really Yellow Mitsubishi Lancer, only one owner very well kept. Do you think over the years the value will raise higher???

Does that mean if I keep my 1997 Suzuki Sidekick it will be a collector car someday?

I have a 1974 Subaru DL wagon that I am getting ready to restore, and it was a one owner car with 58,ooo original miles on it. How much do you think it is worth.??? Everything is in good shape except for the paint and upholstrey. Or should I just junk it.?? Lilsparky@wildblue.net

What about the value of a old Nissan Patrol?

Would like consideration for early Hondacars from the 60's to the early 70's as well. Some of the roadsters, coupes, and even sedans, are worth far more than their original purchase price. Combine value, general loss of population due to rust and initial disinterest, and lack of spares and what you get is exclusivity! I know i get significant amounts of attention when displaying or driving my Hondacar; not to mention hybrid-like fuel economy!

It pleases me to see the increase interest in collecting and the appreciation in values of these cars too. I feel that I may have one of the cleanest 87 Toyota Supra I've ever seen that is completely original never been touched always garaged kept. It is the most dependable car that I have ever owned since '92 scheduled mait. and that's it. By then they we're also really good looking and very dependable. It's insured with you and fortunately never needed to use the insurance.

Dont forget about the Mazda Cosmo's www.mazdacosmo.com

It is gratifying to finally see classic Japanese cars getting attention within the traditional collector car market. I am glad I purchased my 72 240Z eighteen months ago at a very reasonable price. These rising values make me feel better about spending good money on NOS Nissan parts and a quality refresh. Although I have no intention of ever selling it because I had been searching for this car for nine years.

So is it time to sell or buy?
