Q: I have a 1964 Barracuda insured through Hagerty. I am trying to find out if my car is a rare Barracuda but I'm not sure how to go about that. I have found several web sites that explain the VIN# but they don't really help much. There is some confusion concerning the last digits that explain how many were made. If my Cuda is rare I need to increase the insurance on it. I was hoping that you could give me some suggestions on how to proceed discovering the value of my car. According to the VIN# we know the year, make, and place of manufacturing of the car but not how many 4-speed V-8 were made. I would appreciate any suggestions you have.
A: Thanks for the question about your 1964 ½ Plymouth Barracuda. I have very little information about total vehicle numbers built in my resources, but have a little bit of information. This is from the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975. A total of 23,443 1964 Plymouth Barracuda cars were built, and the car was introduced to the public just before the Ford Mustang, in April 1964. Like the Mustang, it was considered a 1964 ½ model.  Out of all of the Plymouth automobiles sold in 1964, only 4.1% had the 4 speed option. In the entire 1963 model year, only 1.2% had the 4 speed option. There is no breakdown as to how many Barracuda 4 speed cars were built. There are no breakdowns as to how many Barracuda cars were manufactured with the 225 cubic inch six cylinder engine, or with the 273 cubic inch V8 engine.
