I am applying for a salvage title and need the gross weight for a 1974 Triumph. The title has 000. I called the State of Michigan and they want me to contact a dealership who sells Triumph and get something on letterhead stating the gross weight. Do you have any suggestions on who to call for this?
As you probably know, Triumph pulled out of the United States in 1981, so there haven’t been any dealers in almost 30 years. However, the first place to look for the weight of your Triumph is in the Standard Catalog of Imported Cars 1946-2002. In 1974, Triumph offered two models: the Spitfire and the TR6. According to this reference source, the Spitfire had a weight of 1,710 pounds and the larger TR6 weighed 2,156 pounds. If the state will not accept a photocopy from the book, former Triumph PR Manager Mike Cook suggests acquiring a factory brochure, owner’s handbook or service manual, all of which will show the weight. Good sources for such literature include: www.chelsealit.com and www.autolit.com.
