 Kim is the librarian for the Antique Automobile Club of America. She works at the AACA Library in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She’s worked there for 25 years. When she started, the library filled three rooms on the second floor of the AACA National Headquarters and additional material was stored in the attic and basement.

As enthusiasts, we love our cars. Perhaps even in an unhealthy way, as has certainly been suggested by some of our spouses. Unfortunately, the average tow company, flatbed driver or auto shipper probably doesn’t care nearly as much for your vehicle as you do. As a result, damage is often more the rule than the exception.

With a limited budget, the tools in my shop come from auctions, outlet stores, mark-down aisles, swap meets, mail-order houses and eBay. My shop has bargains like a $150 air compressor, $11 work bench, $35 tool chest and $10 engine stand. Except for a few splurges like a Backyard Buddy 4-post hydraulic lift and a better-quality Eastwood engine leveler, most of my equipment could be described as “cheap tools.” That doesn’t mean they’re of inferior quality – it means they just didn’t cost as much as one might expect.

What went wrong: The customer backed the car out of his garage and put it into Park. As he opened the door to get out, the car began to roll backwards. He tried to stop it, but was knocked to the ground. The car rolled over his legs (luckily, without causing any injury), down a hill, and eventually stopped when it ran into a tree.
