World of Corvette

Author: Jerry Burton

The Chevrolet Corvette is one of America's oldest and most revered automotive nameplates… and more than 55 years later, it's not about to slow down.

That's right. The Corvette has been around longer than the Bel Air, the Biscayne, the Malibu, the Chevette, the Corvair, the Camaro, the Nova, and even the Impala. A two-seat sports car from Chevrolet, one of America's largest purveyors of family transportation? Who'd have thought?

Owner Stories

Guy Larsen

Guy Larsen knows his Corvettes. He has to, as a division director for judges at the Bloomington Gold show every year in Illinois.

"I oversee the judges for the C4, C5, C6 cars," he explained. "But I also talk to the owners, and make sure they're having fun and understand the scoring."

Tom Ligouri

As a kid, Tom Ligouri watched "Route 66" and dreamed of driving a Corvette of his own. In 1969, he got his chance and the car has by his side ever since.

Tom was just 21 when he picked up his LeMans Blue convertible at a dealership in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. It came equipped with a black vinyl hardtop, black leather interior, a 350/350 engine, and close-ratio manual transmission. "It was gorgeous," he recalled.

  1. I own two Corvettes, a 1981, and a 1980 Convertible (yes that is correct, Convertible!) Wonderful cars, fun, affordable and reliable cars. Phenomenal!

  2. Ron McKinney

We have a beautiful Corvette also it a 1968 black on black (was green) with 47,000 miles. I bough it in 1970 and it had 22,000 miles on it. It is a 427 tri power with a four speed munce tran. I love the Vette and wouldn't trade it for a farm in Ga.

  3. Great information. I hope you make this avaialble under "resources" or sell it as a CD. Very nice!

  4. Just one more place to relive my past Corvettes and keep my dream alive of owning another Vette someday.

  5. We have two beautiful corvettes. A 73 Bright Corvette Yellow, bought new. It has 13600 miles on it. Not that I don't love driving it, just didn't find the time. All original but for several new batteries, new brakes, tires (old ones cracked but still have them?) and mufflers and tail pipes. The 2004 C5 has 8300 miles and is a lot more comfortable, faster and I love the magnetic suspension system. Its quality is much better but the 73's styling is sooo-- sweet!

  6. Make this a permanent fixture under your "resources" tab!

  7. Brian Ford Portland, OR

I have a 1968 Corvette that I bought a few years ago that had been kept in a field under a tarp for a few years. Towed it home and been having fun working on it since.

Great article and we love our Corvette Roadster but, the 1957 Corvette was not the first production, normally aspirated car to offer one horsepower per cubic inch. Our 1956 Jaguar XK-140MC Roadster made 210 HP with its 210 CI engine as did the earlier XK-120s equipped with the C Type head. Thank you for listening and thank you for providing affordable Classic car insurance for us hobbyists.

  15. Wynemac Woodcock Buffalo, IN

I have owned my 1961 Corvette since 1967 and drove it daily until I retired in March of 2000. It had 96452 miles on it by then. I recently restored the 1961 and a 1963 split window coupe and 1964 covertible which belonged to a friend who talked me into the undertaking. It took all summer to comlete the three cars in our spare time. I am returning my vette to the road as a seasonal daily driver.

I have owned sports cars ever since I got my drivers license in 1964. Nothing come across like a Corvette for all around fun. I bought my 1966 Corvette Coupe in 1970 and still have it. I frame-off restored it and now it is only used for shows. I also have a 1999 Convertible.
