  • Auction Coverage by Hagerty

    Written by Barry (Washington) on April 17, 2013  |  Hagerty client for 10 plus years  |  Favorite car: Ford Thunderbirds = (1955 - 1957) (1958 - 1966)

I am disappointed in the nature of Hagerty Staff comments covering the various high profile auctions. I feel auctions over inflate the value of classic cars. True a car is only worth what a buyer is wiling to pay for it. In the case of auctions the majority of car hobbiest couldn't afford the vehicles crossing the auction block. Its only dealers, museums, high end collectors who purchase cars for their large collection who purchase at these auctions. To find the true value of collector cars Hagerty should survey private owners who purchase and sell their vehicles. A prospective car enthusiast should look for a classic car of their choice at a car club, swap meet car corral, private owner, e-bay, local car show, or Hemmings Motor News. The old car hobby is about memories you had when you were younger, passing this passion along to youth of today, driving these old cars. Its certainly not about how much a car is worth running across an auction block!

Hagerty says: Thoughts on auction results

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this with us.  We wholeheartedly agree that we should be looking far and wide to find out what vehicles are selling for and that there is more to the hobby than very expensive cars at exclusive auctions.  In fact, our Valuation Tool culls information from all the sources you list above and more to determine current values. While the classic car hobby is most certainly about memories and not about dollars, buying and selling cars is a big part of the experience, and auctions (both the high-end and the immediately accessible) provide a level of transparency to a sale that a classified ad cannot. For this reason, we choose to share highlights from major auctions throughout the year so that our readers can have one more resource at their disposal when it comes to market information.

Your comment about the hobby being about memories is spot on and we believe that passionately here at Hagerty.  Did you catch our recent video about a son buying his parents their first car to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary?  Producing that video was a labor of love here.  We don’t want to sound defensive, though.  Know that we are with you 100%.  Our media team will definitely see your comments that our coverage seems skewed towards high-end auction results, and they will work to bring a better balance that coverage.  They are constantly striving to make sure we appeal to our entire client base.

it is so easy to communicate with Hagerty about a classic car. Other agencies have no idea what you are talking about.

  • You get what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written by Darin (New York) on February 26, 2013  |  Hagerty client for 10 plus years  |  Favorite car: 1970 mustang, duh, its what I own

I was a Hagerty insurance customer for 20 years. I insured my 70 mustang with you guys the whole time with not so much as a hiccup. Never having to call you guys but just knowing you had my back at all times. About 6 months ago a friend of mine told me he had Geico insurance and it was cheaper than Hagerty. Rather than researching, I just made a knee jerk reaction and switched to Geico. I was under the assumption that Geico was Geico. I was incorrect. Geico farms their insurance to a company called "American Modern" insurance. I was not told this by Geico until after I switched and started filling out the paperwork. After switching to this company I get a notice 3 weeks later. the notice tells me it is a second notice of cancellation and they are going to cancel me without telling me why or sending a FIRST NOTICE! I call the company and sit on the phone for 45 minutes. The person tells me the cancellation is because they didn't send me a paper to sign. So.... they made a mistake and they are going to cancel me for this? YES! I tell them I can fax the signature and they say ok. I tell them I want some sort of confirmation that they received it and they tell me not to worry about it. Well, luckily, I do worry after 2 days and call them again. Another 45 minute wait on the phone. Guess what? They say they did not get it! Start over and do it again! This time I insist they e-mail me and they do to let me know they got it. It does not stop there Today I open my bank statement to find out that instead of taking $12.24 out of my account, they took out $1224.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call them again. 45 minute wait. They admit they make a mistake but then tell me I HAVE to go to my bank and fax them a statement proving that they took it or they won't give it back! WHAT?! They just told me they did it. I jump through that hoop and call them back. 45 minute wait. Now they tell me I have to wait 10 days to get my money back! I called you today, 3 minute wait on the phone. Tell you I need my insurance back. You tell me you will call me right back and what happens? YOU ACTUALLY CALL ME BACK!!!! You set up my insurance and tell me I am done. What a relief. After everything I have gone through with this other company I WILL NEVER switch away from Hagerty again. I have learned my lesson. Please use this letter to read to every person who switches away from your company for "price". Read this letter to them so they can understand sometimes you actually get what you pay for.

I've not had to use my insurance so i cant speak from that point. But making a policy was very easy to use. The fee was ALOT lower than my usual insurance.

  • Another happy customer

Written by George (New Hampshire) on January 26, 2013  |  Hagerty client for 5 years  |  Favorite car: Toss up between Shelby GT 350 and 69 Boss 302

Hagerty was recommended by my regular insurance agent when they could no longer handle insuring my classic Shelby. I had heard about Hagerty Insurance before and looked into them. What I found out confirmed that their recomendation was a good one. They are very easy to talk to and their flexibility work for how I use my car. Other classic car companies have restrictions that do not work for how I want to enjoy my car. Luckily I have never had to submit a claim, but I know Hagerty would live up to their reputation.

I have been very pleased with the co-operation I have gotten from the company on setting coverages, adding vehicles etc .I have however, never had occasion to test the coverage as I have never sustained any damage to my vehicles. The premium does go up every year though. Not happy about that but I guess everything goes up.
