Welcome to our second edition of the Club E-Newsletter! It's hard to believe that the summer car show season has already come to a close.
We're focusing this issue on Youth Initiatives and how your club can get involved. I'm pleased to report that there is growing awareness for the need to get and keep kids involved in the old car hobby, and there has been wonderful progress on many levels. The Hagerty Youth Judging program was presented at nine major events this summer with great success. And a couple of events that I know of went above and beyond to make their show more youth-focused.
Sally Perkins, President of the CCCA, wrote a wonderful message in the CCCA Bulletin about how this summer's Indiana Region's CARavan was specifically timed and designed to include young people. Earlier this spring, the AACA Grand National Meet in Melbourne, Fla., was also a big success. The Cape Canaveral Region's approach was elegantly simple – Larry Runyan organized several members willing to take kids for a ride in a classic car – and the response was huge. Simple, effective and fun.
Here's an idea that any local car club can take part in – the Hagerty Model Building Contest. We provide model kits to the clubs, and each holds its own local contest to pick a “Best of Club” winner. We then use internet judging to narrow that down to five finalists. In August, the young designers from our first-ever Model Building Contest were flown to Pebble Beach to participate in final judging. You can read all about it elsewhere in this newsletter.
We'd love to hear about your club's efforts to get kids involved – simply send an e-mail to jvajda@hagerty.com. Remember how much you admired your dad, your grandfather or big brother for sharing a cool car with you? It's your turn to pass along the fun, friendships and satisfaction of owning a classic vehicle to the next generation. Drive safely and have fun!
